Mental health has long been one of Healthwatch Leeds’ key focuses, so when the country went into lockdown in March 2020, it seemed even more important than ever to keep hearing people’s views on how the crisis was affecting their wellbeing and the kind of support they would like to get.

The last year has been a very positive one for Healthwatch Leeds. We have reinforced and built on our previous work and have increased our profile across the City of Leeds. A number of examples can be seen in here.

What relatives of care home residents in Leeds are saying

This report focuses on how the wellbeing of residents in Leeds care homes have been affected by these challenges, as told by their relatives. It aims to share good practice, offer practical tips and provide recommendations of how some of the challenges can be addressed going forward into the next phase of lockdown.

Between January and March 2019, we worked collaboratively with a number of organisations. They helped us to reach out to people with visual impairments in different settings, including those who attended social groups and hospital eye clinics. We also hosted a couple of focus groups to gain their feedback.

Mental Health Crisis in Leeds

This work was carried out between January and March 2019 to find out what it is like to have a mental health crisis in Leeds. We wanted to find out if people knew where to go for help and support and how that support was once they had accessed it.

Long Term Plan Report

West Yorkshire and Harrogate (WYH) Health and Care Partnership were asked to come up with a local plan explaining how the priorities in the NHS Long Term Plan will be delivered in our area, specifically a 5-year strategy

Maternity and Mental Services in Leeds

As part of this Healthwatch Leeds was commissioned by Healthwatch England to carry out some focused work around maternity and mental health. The project comprised of an online and face to face survey and focus groups targeted at parents with experience of mental ill health before, during and/or after pregnancy. It also involved an Enter and View visit to the Yorkshire and Humber Mother and baby unit which provides inpatient support for mothers experiencing severe mental health difficulties.

Barriers to GP registration

GP Registration

We know that sometimes immigration status, not having a fixed address, or being able to provide identification can be a barrier for people trying to register with a GP. We wanted to find out people’s experiences of this in Leeds, so we asked 79 people who were either homeless, refugees or seeking asylum about their experiences.
