We spoke to people staying at the recovery hub and their family members about their experience of using the service. We asked about quality of care, their experience of rehabilitation, activities, choice, opportunities to give feedback and the living environment.
Recommendations
Ensure that people and/or their family members understand what a care plan is and are invited to be involved in reviews.
Look at ways to improve how people’s individual care needs are more consistently met and communicated to all staff. For example, through assessment processes or appropriate training (for example, in dementia).
Review systems for documenting and acting on people’s cultural and religious needs so that these are more consistently met.
Put in place mechanisms to ensure that people staying at the recovery hub and their friends or family members are made aware who the registered manager and other key staff are.

Key actions
The Recovery Hub is currently conducting a review of our goal storage and recording practices. This initiative aims to enhance the accessibility of goals for both clients and their designated support network. While the current process involves collaborative SMART goal setting with clinicians during initial consultations and therapy sessions, we are evaluating how these goals are documented and shared to ensure optimal visibility.
The Recovery Hub will be undertaking a cycle of Dementia Care Mapping, an established approach to achieving and embedding person-centred care for people with dementia to help staff teams to understand the perspectives and experiences of people with dementia.
To improve the cultural competency of our teams, we will be implementing a training programme that will focus on self-awareness, helping participants recognise their own cultural background, biases, and how these might influence their interactions as well as exploring the concept of culture and its impact on health beliefs and behaviours.
The service has created a welcome letter to cascade on admission. This provides the person with a good overview of the service as well as information about who the manager is and how best to contact them.

My father in-law spent the final few months of his life here. We are so very grateful for the care he received by all the staff there. They showed him total respect and allowed him to pass with dignity. The staff showed compassion for him and towards his family – we were kept informed and included in his care plan and nothing was too much trouble – management were very supportive of our needs and views. Thank you for everything.
