Vaccine uptake in Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities

During August and September 2022, we talked to 31 people from the Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities about their perceptions and past experiences of vaccines as well as their experience of accessing information about vaccines.

Key findings

94% of participants were unsure or unhappy about receiving both Covid-19 and flu vaccination at the same appointment

Offering drop-in vaccinations at local community locations that were within walking distance and providing interpreters would help encourage people to get vaccinated.

There were concerns raised about the nasal flu vaccine routinely offered to children not being halal. Knowing the halal status of vaccines, in general, was very important to people.

Actions taken by NHS England

As a result of this national work, NHS England recognised that there was a lack of engagement with Bangladeshi communities so they have worked closely with Bangladeshi media outlets on health promotion articles and on the 9th of December they hosted a vaccination event at East London Mosque in Tower Hamlets where more than one-third of the population belong to the Bangladeshi community.

Highlights

Finding from the report have been shared with national and regional colleagues on the vaccination programme, with systems and stakeholders.

NHS England is working to raise awareness of the vaccination programme by targeting Bangladeshi media outlets.

A mass vaccination event was held at the East London Mosque to provide free flu and Covid-19 vaccinations to Bangladeshi and other communities.
